Virginia Continues to Impress: NCAA Review for Feb 23

After the frantic pace of 19 Top 25 games yesterday, Sunday’s slate was relatively scant, yet full of intrigue. There were only four games with Top 25 teams involved, but the games were hotly contested and will help shape critical races in major conferences.

(24) Ohio State Buckeyes 57 (19-8)
Michigan Wolverines 64 (14-13)
Final

The biggest rivalry in college football yielded the first Top 25 upset of the day, the University of Michigan prevailed over Ohio State on Sunday. Michigan’s upset was fueled by 16 points from Spike Albrecht and 15 points from Zak Irvine, as they sprinted to a 16 point lead at halftime. Ohio State’s leading scorer D’Angelo Russell had 16 points, one of three Buckeyes with double digit points, but the team could not fight back from the big first half deficit. Ohio State looks to rebound against Nebraska while Michigan looks to even their Big Ten record at 8-8 against Maryland.

(9) Utah Runnin’ Utes 58 (21-5)
Oregon Ducks 69 (20-8)
Final

As the calendar draws closer to March, road conference games become tougher; Utah learned that in losing to NCAA tournament hopeful Oregon on Sunday. Oregon’s upset was fueled by 19 points from Dillon Brooks and the Ducks holding the Utes to 36.5% shooting from the field. Delon Wright had a game high 20 points for Utah, but was the only Ute with double figure points. Utah looks to stay in the Pac-12 championship hunt against Arizona State as Oregon looks to move into second in the Pac-12 against California.

Evansville Aces 43 (19-9)
(13) Wichita State Shockers 62 (25-3)
Final

Wichita State dominated from the beginning against Evansville, posting a resounding victory over a team with NCAA tournament aspirations. Wichita State may have only shot 38.6% from the field, but Fred VanVleet had 22 points and Ron Baker added 18 points and 15 rebounds, providing all of the offense the Shockers needed. The Aces only had one player with more than eight points, Egidijus Mockevicius with 15, as the team shot a woeful 31.3 % from the field and 1-12 from three point range. Evansville’s focus moves to sweeping league leading University of Northern Iowa and Wichita State will face Indiana State next.

Florida State Seminoles 41 (15-13)
(2) Virginia Cavaliers 51 (25-1)
Final

The second ranked team in America continues to roll, as Virginia pulled away late against Florida State to move to 25-1. Virginia was paced by 13 points and nine rebounds from Anthony Gill while posting 11 steals as a team. Florida State was paced by Xavier Rathan-Mayes’ 13 points, but only shot 32.6% from the field and were held without a basket from the field for the final 10:34 of the game. Florida State turns their focus to revenge against in-state rival Miami and the Cavaliers look to maintain their ACC lead against Wake Forest.
