A Day for the Favorites: NCAA Review for Feb 27

There were only four games that involved Top 25 teams and there was very little excitement in the games. The top teams rolled and moved closer to solidifying their stances in the NCAA tournament. As we move towards March, the top teams need to rise to the top, and that is exactly what happened last night.

Let’s get to the games:

(7) Arizona Wildcats 82 (25-3)
Colorado Buffaloes 54 (12-15)
Final

Arizona edges closer to a regular season Pac 12 championship, steamrolling Colorado on Thursday night. Arizona had a balanced effort, led by four three point field goals off the bench from Gabe York and 15 points from Stanley Johnson. Colorado did have 14 points from Askia Booker but were outshot three point range- five for Arizona and only two for Colorado- and on the free throw line- 23 made free throws for Arizona compared to only 12 for Colorado. Colorado continues against teams from the state of Arizona as they face Arizona State while Arizona has a de facto Pac 12 regular season championship game against Utah.

(21) SMU Mustangs 66 (23-5)
Memphis Tigers 57 (17-11)
Final

SMU moved closer to an AAC title, beating Memphis last night in Tennessee. SMU had 16 points from Nic Moore, winning in spite of 13-24 free throw shooting. Shaq Goodwin filled the stat sheet with 17 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks for Memphis, but the team was only six of seven from the free throw line and missed ten of their 15 three point field goals. Memphis will turn their focus to Tulsa while SMU has a tough road matchup with Connecticut.

Arizona State Sun Devils 41 (15-13)
(13) Utah Runnin’ Utes 83 (22-5)
Final

Utah simply dominated Arizona State at home last night, fighting to stay alive in the Pac 12 regular season championship race. The Utes’ effort was more from a team effort, 63.3% shooting from the field and holding Arizona State to 28% shooting, and Utah led by 32 at halftime. The Sun Devils did have two players with double digit points, but were truly hapless in a 42 point loss. Arizona State looks to rebound against Colorado and Utah has to prepare for a Top 10, and Pac 12 leading, foe in Arizona.

San Diego Toreros 39 (14-15)
(3) Gonzaga Bulldogs 59 (29-1)
Final

Gonzaga has now won 22 consecutive games, second best streak in the nation behind Kentucky, rolling out San Diego. Gonzaga had a balanced effort, led by 14 points and eight rebounds from Przemek Karnowski, and also held San Diego to 29.6% shooting. San Diego had no players with double digit points and struggled at the free throw line at well, shooting six of 11 from the free throw line. San Diego closes their West Coast Conference schedule against Portland while West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga looks to close their West Coast Conference schedule a perfect 18-0 against BYU.
