Bottom of the Barrel: The Week in MLB Fails

For every incredible diving grab or mile-long homer, there seems to be an equally impressive folly.  Let’s countdown the worst of the worst this week.

5. Ryan Zimmerman is a giant ballhog

Sometimes even the professionals make the mistakes that even little leaguers consider a big no-no. Racing across the field to take your own teammate out like Zimmerman does to Danny Espinosa is more of a teeball move. Zimmerman did avoid a higher ranking on the list by hanging onto the ball, though.

4. Jay Bruce stops a foul ball with his stomach

This one is just a fail of circumstance. Jay Bruce takes a shot right to the gut after Zack Cozart smacks the ball into foul territory. Bruce must have better abdominal strength than I do (not that much of an accomplishment) as he seems to shake it off fairly quickly.

3. Orbit should not play Jenga near Mike Trout and Albert Pujols

Jenga is damn hard enough with the hands of a mascot without a bunch of bullies like Albert Pujols and Mike Trout wrecking poor Orbit’s game.  But feat not, Orbit exacts his revenge by whipping a block at Pujols.

2. Chen is not doing himself any favors

Wei-Yin Chen bobbles the ball before attempting (and failing) to pick it up with his glove. By the time the ball finally reaches first base, the runner is completely safe and the Red Sox are in the lead.

1. Austin Jackson knocks a single that leaves Prince Fielder wildly confused

In Fielder’s defense, this ball absolutely takes a weird spin and ends up where no one would have expected. But for pure comic gold, he sure does look foolish in the actual motion video play.
